Minutes of Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board - 21 May 2019
It was with real pleasure that we had the opportunity to welcome and listen to Apulu Reece Autagavaia give us a brief history on his time as an Elected Local Board Member of the Otara-Papatoetoe Local Board and a break down of the outcomes that dictate their plans and projects.
His legal background and a demonstrated history of working in the hospital and health care industry, provides him with the skills and experience in serving his community.
The local board is split into two areas - 1) Papatoetoe and 2) Otara.  The population of the area is young and diverse in ethnic composition.
The Board has 6 outcomes which dictate their work plan:
1) Transform Manukau CBD
2) Create a prosperous local economy
3) A thriving, inclusive and safe community.
4) Parks and facilities that meet the needs to the community.
5) Sustainable and healthy environment.
6) Connected area and easy to get around
Funding is available for groups that apply, with a current focus on the communities resilience to Covid-19.    The Board is also committed to the Treaty-based obligations and to Maori participation and development.
At present they are generating ideas from the community for two of their big projects - 1) Manukau Sports Bowl-what facilities would the community like to have in this space and 2) Papatoetoe West Streets - making them safer.
As an Otara girl, it is wonderful to see the transformation of our community with new/updated facilities and regular events for our diverse population and youth.
